4th Avenue Underpass Grand Re-Opening Celebration

Join us at Burger City  on August 20th when the Downtown community celebrates the opening of the 4th Avenue underpass. Festivities begin at 3:00 p.m.  Fun, food and music.

KJLL Radio Host John C. Scott will broadcast live from Burger City and you will have a front row seat to everything that’s happening downtown, on 4th Avenue, at Main Gate Square and more:

Grand Opening Party – Aug. 20, 3-10 p.m.

Scheduled events are FREE, unless otherwise noted.

FOURTH AVE. UNDERPASS (Fourth Avenue at Congress)

3-3:30 p.m.: Leila Lopez

3:30-4 p.m.: Seven Pipers

4-5 p.m. Opening ceremony in the underpass – featuring Mayor Bob Walkup, City Council members and other dignitaries. Other participants include the Seven Pipers, antique cars, hot rods and the Old Pueblo Trolley.

DOWNTOWN (Congress Street and throughout Downtown)

3-8 p.m.: Vendor fair at Southern Arizona Transportation Museum in the Historic Depot – arts/crafts and food.

4-9 p.m.: Downtown information booths at NW corner of Congress and Scott

4-8 p.m.: Free ice cream social at Chris’ Cafe in La Placita Village. Ice cream courtesy of BlueBell.

4-8 p.m.: Youth & Teen “Art of Summer” exhibit at The Drawing Studio, 33 S. Sixth Ave.

4-8 p.m.: Pima County Sports Hall of Fame will be open in La Placita Village

5 p.m.: Tucson Birthday Cake competition in Hotel Congress – celebrity judges include Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, TSO conductor George Hanson and KOLD meteorologist Chuck George. Free cake for visitors!

5:30-6:30 p.m.: TSO Percussion Ensemble on Club Congress Patio

5-7 p.m.: Half-price admission at Tucson Children’s Museum. Free face painting by the Quasimodos Sisters.

5-7 p.m.: Elemental Artistry at Tucson Children’s Museum – fire dancing group will use LED lights to engage youngsters with their flashy art form.

5-8 p.m.: Antique car show at Southern Arizona Transportation Museum (in Historic Depot)

5:30-9:30 p.m.: Alex Samaniego’s Spanglish monologues, 15-minute plays, live music and tours of the theater at Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 S. Sixth Ave.

6-8 p.m.: Harley Davidson motorcycle show at La Placita Village

6-8 p.m.: Determined Luddites play Maynard’s Market

6-9 p.m.: Swing Dance with Kings of Pleasure at Southern Arizona Transportation Museum’s locomotive site – tickets are $10 per person or $16.73 per couple.

7 p.m.: Second annual Best Legs in a Kilt Contest at Flanagan’s Celtic Corner. Entry to the contest is free, but all entrants must be wearing a kilt. Register for the contest by 6 p.m. First, second and third place winners receive gift certificates to Celtic Corner worth $50, $25 and $10 respectively. Bagpipe music provided by the Seven Pipers.

7:30 p.m.: Cinema La Placita – “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”

Tucson’s Birthday Event at Old Town Artisans Aug 20th

Art demonstrators throughout the day:

Demonstration using pottery from the natural desert clay and glazes found from the area which are similar that were used by the Hohocum.

Mary Ann Anderson, Tucson watercolorist will be demonstrating watercolor artisty on postcards. She will be here during the late afternoon hours.

Live Entertainment Schedule:

9 – 12 noon – InAscent – Folk Music
InAscent plays a wide variety of music including Country, Light Pop, Folk, Oldies and Blues.They also play original tunes. Robin plays guitar and Michelle plays both flute and harmonica. Both ladies sing and they are known for their exquisite harmonies.

12 to 4 pm – Rudy Cortese and Joel L. – Bluegrass
Local bluegrass muscians Rudy Cortese & Joel Leland ie; “Cadilac Mountain” performing live

4 to 7 pm – Tom Short – Composer and Musician playing easy listening music

7 to 10 pm – Ryanhood – Acoustic Rock
(Ryanhood was nominated for an unprecedented 7 Tucson Music Awards (TAMMIES)! Sept 3 is the award show at Rialto Theatre, doors open at 6:30 with free admission.
